Tesla color change wrap in New Jersey

Tesla only sells a handful of factory colors, so every parking lot in North Jersey has the same row of white and black cars. Plenty of owners want something different but don’t want to repaint. That’s where wrapping comes in, and the big difference from paint is that you can go back.

A wrap is reversible

Vinyl goes over your paint, not into it. Take the film off and the factory finish is still underneath. Repainting is hard to undo and it follows the car at resale. A wrap doesn’t. If you’re leasing, the film comes off before turn-in and the car goes back the color Tesla sold it. We wrote about wrapping a leased car separately.

Get tired of it in a couple of years and you can go a different direction. Some customers are on their second or third color.

The finish changes the car as much as the color

The same color reads completely differently depending on the finish. Gloss looks closest to factory paint and it’s the easiest to keep clean. Satin is a softer sheen that catches light along the body lines, which works well on a car with surfaces as smooth as a Tesla. Matte is the one people notice from across the lot. Color shift film changes color depending on the angle you look at it.

If you can’t decide, come by and hold the actual samples against your car. Colors look different on a screen than they do on sheet metal in daylight.

Color PPF changes the color and protects the paint

If you want a new color and rock chip protection in one step, there’s color PPF. It’s paint protection film with color in it, so it’s thicker than vinyl, it takes the rock hits, and it self heals. It costs more than a vinyl wrap, but you’re buying two things at once. Tesla paint is on the thin and soft side, which is why some owners go this route.

You don’t have to do the whole car

A partial job changes the look of the car more than people expect. The ones Tesla owners ask for most:

Cameras and sensors keep working

This is the question Tesla owners ask most. We don’t cover the Autopilot cameras or the sensors. We take parts off and wrap the film behind the panel edges, and we cut around the cameras and sensors. And no, a wrap or PPF doesn’t void your Tesla warranty.

How long it takes and how long it lasts

Plan on about a week in the shop for a full color change. Handles, badges and lights come off so the film wraps behind each panel edge, and that takes time. A partial job is much quicker depending on what you’re doing.

Vinyl lasts two to three years depending on how it’s cared for. Our warranty covers bubbling and peeling for three years. It doesn’t cover fading or discoloration, so park in the shade when you can.

Common questions

Will removing the wrap damage my paint?

Good film removed within its life leaves the factory paint the way it was. Leaving film on long past its life makes removal harder. We do the removal ourselves.

Can I put any color over my Tesla’s factory color?

Yes. The film covers what’s underneath completely. White to black, black to something bright, all of it works.

Is a partial job actually noticeable?

It is. A black roof or a chrome delete on its own changes how the car reads. A lot of people start there instead of doing the whole car.

Can I run it through a car wash?

We recommend hand washing. If someone else washes it, tell them to keep the pressure washer off the film edges and to rub the tire shine in instead of spraying it on.
