Six come up regularly: gloss, satin, matte, stealth, metallic and frozen. On GSWF’s current color PPF range, metallic and frozen films together account for as many products as gloss does, and more than satin and matte combined.
The finish carries as much detail as the color does. Gloss reflects, matte does not, satin sits between them, and stealth is a satin layer over the color your car already has.
The six finishes
| Finish | Reflection | What it does to the car | Keeps original color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gloss | High | Reads closest to factory paint, holds highlights and reflections | No |
| Satin | Low | Soft sheen, a muted version of gloss | No |
| Matte | None | Shows body lines instead of reflected light | No |
| Stealth | Low | Satin sheen laid over the existing paint | Yes |
| Metallic | Varies | Flake in the film catches light in points, not as a sheet | No |
| Frozen | Low | Matte surface with metallic underneath, shifts as you move | No |
Frozen is the one most people have not heard of, and on GSWF’s current range it is the second most common finish after gloss. It is a flat surface with metallic suspended under it, so the car reads matte standing still and shifts as you walk around it.
Stealth deserves its own line. A stealth film is clear or lightly tinted satin, so a red car stays red and only the sheen changes. If you like your car’s color and want it to look different anyway, this is the one.
Why the finish carries as much as the color
A dark car in gloss shows you the sky, the streetlights and the car next to it. The same car in matte shows you its own shoulders and creases. Reflections hide body lines. Take the reflections away and the shape of the car is all that is left.
That is why several cars in the same black can look like different cars. It is also why a color that looked right on a screen can look wrong in person. A screen only ever shows you one finish.
What the manufacturers specify
Finish is a property of the film, not something applied afterward, so the published specs differ by product rather than by color.
GSWF Chroma Guard, one of the color PPF lines we install, is a TPU film at 200 microns. That is roughly two and a half times the thickness of a typical vinyl wrap. It ships in rolls 1.52 meters wide and 16.5 meters long, with a published adhesive strength of 75 N per centimeter and a minimum application temperature above 10 degrees Celsius. That temperature floor is one reason film work is an indoor job year round in the Northeast.
UPPF, another color PPF manufacturer, publishes over 42 colors in its main range and 65 or more in its newer Cobia line, with a stated 10 year warranty against delamination, yellowing, bubbling and cracking. Finish options sit inside those ranges, which means the color selection within any one finish is smaller than the headline number suggests.
Finish and durability
Matte and satin films ask for different care than gloss. The surface that refuses to reflect light also refuses to hide a polish mark, and these finishes cannot be buffed the way gloss can. Anything abrasive leaves a shiny patch that does not come back out.
We wrote up the care difference separately in matte and satin wrap care, and the way finishes hold up over time in how long wrap colors last.
Finish on vinyl versus color PPF
Gloss, satin and matte are available in both. The difference is what sits underneath.
| Vinyl wrap | Color PPF | |
|---|---|---|
| Finishes | Gloss, satin, matte and specialty films | Gloss, satin, matte, metallic, frozen |
| Color choice | Hundreds | Tens |
| Thickness | Around 80 microns | 200 microns for GSWF Chroma Guard |
| Protects paint | Covers it | Built to absorb impact |
If the finish is what you care about, both get you there. If you want the finish and paint protection in one layer, that is color PPF rather than vinyl.
Deciding in order
- Finish and color together. Decide them as one choice, not one after the other.
- Then whether you want to keep your current color. If yes, stealth.
- Then the color family. Dark hides body lines, light shows them.
- Then vinyl or color PPF.
- Then confirm the exact color exists in the finish and film you picked.
FAQ
What is the difference between satin and matte?
Satin has a low sheen. Matte has none. Side by side the difference is obvious, but in a photograph they often look the same, which is why the samples matter.
What is stealth PPF?
A satin film laid over your existing paint. The color underneath stays and only the sheen changes, so a red car becomes a satin red car.
Can you make a gloss car matte without changing the color?
Yes, that is what stealth does.
Does matte film need different care than gloss?
Yes. Matte and satin cannot be polished or buffed. Anything abrasive leaves a permanent shiny mark.
Is matte more expensive than gloss?
The film itself is usually comparable. Any price difference comes from the specific product, not the finish category.
Does color PPF come in matte?
Yes. GSWF’s current color PPF range includes matte, alongside gloss, satin, metallic and frozen. The color selection within any one finish is smaller than it is for vinyl.
Which finish lasts longest?
Durability is set by the film’s construction and top coat rather than its finish. A quality matte film and a quality gloss film from the same line carry the same warranty.
Come look at them
A finish is difficult to judge from a screen. The same film reads one way under shop lights, another in sunlight, and another again across your own car’s body lines.
Both shops keep samples on hand. Hackensack at 13 E Moonachie Rd and Danbury at 3 Commerce Dr. Call ahead and we will pull the finishes you are considering so you can hold them against your own paint.
